Community Calendar February 1 to 26. Fiestas de Bajos de Chila in Chila, Oaxaca, near Puerto Escondido. February 1 to 8 will be soccer, valley ball, bicycling, and foot races. Check with Gina at the tourist booth in Puerto Escondido. February 4 at 8:00 pm is the election of the Queen at City Hall. February 6 at 9:00 am registration for the chess game. February 7 at 3:00 pm is a marathon race downtown. February 8 at 8:00 pm a cultural event near the church. February 10 at 7:00 pm is a singing contest near the church. February 11 and 12 at 10:00 am is Pelota Mixteca, a ball game unique to the state of Oaxaca. Ask Gina for more information. February 12 at 10:00 am is a livestock expo. February 14 at 11:00 pm fireworks. February 16 rodeo. February 19 horse races. February 26 is a big rodeo closing the event. Bajos means lowlands and Chila is the nickname for Lucila, a renowned curandera who once lived here. • Fiesta Bajos de Chila First half of February. A large regional festival held annually. Includes native dances and other cultural events, cock fights, sport events including a Pelota Mixteca tournament, a red light district, fireworks display on February 14 at 11:00pm, something for everyone.
• Pelota Mixteca Tournament The National Pelota Mixteca Championship has been held in Chila in May.

The new highway makes access to this remote mountain village easy. We arrived in a rental car from Económica. Taxis are another option--there are taxis available in town for the return trip.
• Highway 200 is the coastal highway connecting the oceanfront towns.
• The Puerto Escondido International Airport is located 3 miles east. Refer to the transportation page for information.
