The Laguna Manialtepec is a large, beautiful lake situated between the foothills of the Sierra Madre del Sur and the Pacific Coast. It is
deeper and fresher than Chacahua. During the rainy season, the water level rises until the Río Manialtepec breaks through its sandbar and the lagoon becomes a tidal estuary. There are 100's of species of birds--cormorant, anhinga, herons (including great blue, little blue, black-crowned night heron), ibis, parrots, egrets, ducks, jacanas (lily walkers). Many tours are available; Hidden Voyages Ecotours is recommended. You can find some visitors' comments on Manialtepec with the Puerto Escondido Visitors' Comments. See photos of the Birds of Manialtepec and Michael Malone's list of Birds of the Manialtepec Area.
