San Mateo Río Hondo is a mountain village, population 2806 (2005), named for the patron saint San Mateo and for the river which passes near the town. It is the municipal seat of the surrounding towns including San José del Pacifico, 10km to the west. Like many mountain villages in Mexico, San Mateo is spread out with an irregular street pattern with mostly unpaved streets. At an elevation of 7546', it is generally cool with cold nights, surrounded by pine forest.

There are several places to stay but the best is reported to be Posada Yegoyoxi. If you stay in San Mateo, use the link at the bottom of the Hotel section and give me a report.

Additional accommodations are available in San José del Pacifico, 10km away. Easter week and Christmas week are the busiest holiday periods and Mexico and hotels often fill up during these times.
