But, the library is even more than a place to pick up a book or magazine. Drop by the library for information about the town and surrounding areas, for a restaurant recommendation or for some great conversation. Art and reading workshops are held for local as well as children of tourists.
Every year the library gathers together the children of the town to participate in Mexico's long established, nationwide art contest, EL NIÑO Y LA MAR. Thousands of drawings are submitted each year, and the prizes are awarded by state. Since 2003, one of the children of San Augustinillo has placed among the top three winners in our state. Twice a San Agustinillo youngster placed first in Oaxaca, and other years we have had second and third place winners, as well as honorable mentions. This is a source of extreme pride for the town's citizens.
Everything in the library is free to everyone, from the lending of books to the workshops.
How is all this managed? By donations…..of books, art supplies, paper, pens, and money. One of our most valuable resources is the time given by the volunteers who manage the library daily and others who head the art and other workshops. In the past, volunteers and tourists have stopped by to give our kids chess, music and English lessons, so if you want to share a special talent or specialty of yours, just pass by and talk to us.
