Brown pelicans are a common sight in and over the water of Pacific Mexico beaches and lagoons. It is a large bird weighing from 2.75 to 5.5 kg (6-12 pounds) with a wingspan of 1.83 to 2.5 meters (6 to 8.2 feet). They eat mostly fish, amphibians, and crustacians and can be seen diving from the air into the water to catch them. The pelicans nest in colonies usually on islands. The nest may be on the ground or in a low tree. We saw this one at Laguna Manialtepec near Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. |
