Tlaxiaco is located in a small mountain valley about 180 km northwest of the city of Oaxaca. The city is called "Heroica Ciudad de Tlaxiaco" (heroic city) due to the battle fought there during the 1862-67 French invasion (which spawned the Cinco de Mayo celebration). The population of the municipio (regional district) in 2005 was 35,000. At least a quarter of these speak an indigenous language, usually Mixtec or Triqui. About 7700 live in the city. To the west is the cerro Negro and to the south is the cerro de Arriba, a 9432' (2875 meter) peak. The town sits at an elevation of 6693' (2040 meters) and has an average temperature of 65°F (18°C). Temperatures can dip below freezing in the winter. There are pine forests and coal mines in the area. There is cellular telephone service.
Fiesta The town celebrates its festival honoring the battle against the French fought here in the 19th century. The fiesta takes place the third week in October with traditional dances and other events.
