Back in the Nineties, I recall Jesse Jackson apologizing profusely for calling New York City hymietown of some such stupid thing. It impressed me, when he said, as part of his apology that "God was not yet finished with him". Summed up the human condition, mine and yours, pretty well, I thought then and continue to do so. And there he goes again, proving his point. Given that slavery waby • por alan vlautin - Off-Topic Forum
Yea big time, thanks Howard. Maybe we will now all be on the same page and peace and prosperity will reign again...Just hoping.by • por alan vlautin - Off-Topic Forum
Usually, i try not to go too off-topic but enjoy reading the back and forth banter on various threads. What has developed on this one may indeed explain the rancor sometimes exhibited on other recent threads. Perhaps it is that what one has typed does not come across the same as it was written on the screens of others. In those instances, it is not the software involved but more the mutual or indby • por alan vlautin - Off-Topic Forum
We were unable to take this tour during our first time in Oaxaca this year but it was high on the list on our return and we were certainly not disappointed. Linda Martin, the previously mentioned creator of the city and regional transportation map, conducts two hour walking tours of the downtown colonial churches. Advertised as for "the devout, the lapsed and the never-were", the toursby • por alan vlautin - City of Oaxaca
A very kind soul has created a seven page guide that gives you detailed information on bus routes within Oaxaca City and bus and collectivo taxi terminal points to the outlying pueblos and sites. You will quickly recoup its 40 peso cost with the savings you have by using public transportation rather than taxis. The guides are available at the previously mentioned Amate Books or on line at Rby • por alan vlautin - City of Oaxaca
Oaxaca City has certainly expanded since my first visit in 1975. Expanded out not up. You can see this expansion at the Casa de la Cuidad. On the second floor there is a room with aerial views from 1932 and 1957. On the floor are larger aerial views, you can walk on, the first section is from 1990 and the second from 2006. We found it delightful and informative. Currently, on the same floor thereby • por alan vlautin - City of Oaxaca
Sorry. Clever, I, neglected to include the name of the store. It is cleverly named, Amate Books, Macediono Alacala 307-2 corner of Abasolo. Claims the best selection of books in English on Mexico and that can easily be true. Up to date guides and books with detailed information on the region can really enhance your visit.by • por alan vlautin - City of Oaxaca
I love books. My brother and I were blessed with parents who read to us as little children and who we saw read as we got older, inculcating the habit in us and thereby broadening our lives. But enough about me. You, you lucky folks in Oaxaca, whenever you may be there, have a super bookstore. Located at 307 M. Alcala, a block away from Santo Domingo Church, it has an impressive selection of, priby • por alan vlautin - City of Oaxaca
Hello, we are currently enjoying sunny skies in Tepotzlan and next week wish to bus to Oaxaca. Conventional wisdom and all the information we could glean from the net seems to indicate that one should bus back to the southern DF station from Tepotzlan and then go to Oaxaca City from there. However, looking at the map, it seems that a more direct route would be to bus to Cuernavaca and then continby • por alan vlautin - City of Oaxaca
It was said, wisely, I believe, by Humphrey Bogart, I read, that "the whole world is three drinks behind. Cheers and Feliz Navidad!!by • por alan vlautin - Off-Topic Forum
A little perspective: Twenty years ago our Marina neighborhood in San Francisco and the rest of the Bay Area was heavily damaged by an earthquake. If one based their beliefs on the news reports broadcast elsewhere at that time, one would have thought it was total devastation. It was not and we had to field worried calls for friends and family elsewhere to assure them that, fortunately, we and ourby • por alan vlautin - Off-Topic Forum
Hello again, I am reposting this, as I do each year as the information remains valid and, if followed, may allow a more pleasant and healthy visit. While some are endowed with an iron constitution allowing them “to eat anything and never get sick” this is for those who may not be so blessed. On our last few trips to Mexico, the latest for three months a couple years ago, we enjoyed excellentby • por alan vlautin - City of Oaxaca
