A small heron, known in the US as the Louisiana Heron. The tricolored heron ranges from the US Gulf states through Mexico and Central America, the Caribbean to central Brazil and Peru. It nests in colonies on platforms of sticks in trees and shrubs in sub-tropical swamps. The bird is about 22" long with a 38" wingspan.
