The low-lying beachfront town of Zipolite was largely destroyed on October 7, 1997 by Pauline, a category 4 hurricane. Pauline made landfall here with 180 mph gusts and 10-meter waves. There were no deaths in Zipolite. On November 9th, Hurricane Rick delivered additional flooding which hampered reconstruction efforts. See Damage Reports. Nearby Piña Palmera lost most of its buildings.
The town was quickly repaired/reconstructed and is ready for visitors.
