Fondo Guadalupe Musalem A.C. Scholarship Program
April 18, 2014 07:54AM
Fondo Guadalupe Musalem A.C. (sometimes referred to as Casa de la Mujer) is hosting a breakfast at Hotel Fortín Plaza, on Tuesday, April 29, at 9 am. Fondo Guadalupe Musalem A.C. is scholarship program for bright, indigenous Oaxacan women. Yes, there will be speakers (hopefully few in number), including a graduate of the program who will explain how the financial support she received has changed her life in a profoundly positive manner.

Contact Alvin Starkman for more information and to attend: oaxacadream@hotmail.com

1) Donors can directly see the positive impact that giving provides to these young women because if you elect to provide full support to a particular student, you have access to her …. her name, her village, photos, her progress, etc.

2) Donations are tax friendly to Americans, Mexicans, and now Canadians.

3) Lila Downs is an extremely strong supporter of the program, and in fact her annual May concert in Oaxaca is for the benefit of the program; generally towards the end of her concert, she calls all the becarias up to the stage, truly a tear-jerking moment.

4) Each becaria works with a tutor from the greater Oaxacan community, to oversee progress, answer questions, provide ongoing encouragement and emotional support, and so on.

5) The program includes provision for medical care, food, clothing, school supplies, transportation, accommodations if required, and virtually all other expenses related to ensuring that the goals of the program are achieved for each becaria.

6) The transparency of Fondo Guadalupe Musalem A.C. is remarkable, as is its regular reporting to donors.

7) Donations can be for practically any amount you want, and the program is set up so that you can arrange for regular monthly withdrawals from your account. Arlene and I have been donating this way since 2008, and there have never been any banking glitches whatsoever (I know that many who live in Oaxaca are leery of banks, but for us it’s been flawless).

8) The call for prospective participants goes out to the furthest reaches of the state of Oaxaca, and usually the becarias end up being drawn from pretty well every region in the state, no matter how far away from the state capital.

9) Alvin Starkman is Vice-President of CANFRO (Canadian Friends of Oaxaca Inc.), a registered Canadian charity. CANFRO directors chose Fondo Guadalupe Musalem A.C. as one of the Oaxacan charitable organizations to use as a conduit for providing direct support to students. Alvin is the Program Director of The Women’s Project (as well as another) which works with Fondo Guadalupe Musalem A.C. in identifying recipients of the generosity of Canadians.
