The authorities (police, etc.) don't want drugs made legal because they would miss out on the huge $$$$$ funding from the government. That is the only way some of the agencies stay afloat!
If the government would legalize marijuana, that would give the authorities more time to take care of the really serious drugs and crime.

Read the article, we need to follow Portugal's 10 year experiment with ALL drugs. This would do a lot to fix Mexico's problems too.

I thought the consensus is that small amounts of most drugs are legal in all of Mexico. I first heard about it onn CNN International and Sparks and Steve C seemed to have more info a while back in a discussion on tomzap. I don't think the police know that law yet if it is so.

My lawyer says it is legal for medicinal purposes only but he has not done much criminal work in many years. The municipal police still arrest or shake down users but they don't often enter houses as that is supposed to be illegal too. In summer of 2010 two police who investigate for the prosecutors told me 3 joints in your home was legal. I started smoking it then (for medicinal purposes only). Later a Migracion lawyer told me marijuana is illegal. That's when I quit‘ Besides, it was making me a crazy, violent pyromaniac‘‘‘

Does anyone know the laws on recreational drugs at present in Mexico? I think that small amounts of soft and hard drugs are allowed but don't know and, if that is so, it is a law many here do not know about.

I just saw a local cop make a pick up at the local pharmecuticals outlet this morning. He wouldn't say hello when I wished him good morning.

What would all the criminals do for a job. There's not enough jobs to go around as it is. Extortion and kidnapping would be all that's left

They already do the kidnapping and extortion!

Heard on a documentary in December that there is no place on earth where drugs are legal. Some places just tolerate them!

I think the obvious answer to the question is YES ! Treat drug abuse as a health issue rather than a criminal one. The "War on Drugs (people)" has destroyed families, wasted billion$ and made lots of criminals rich. I wish I could be optimistic but I very much doubt that marijuana will be legalized in our lifetimes. Same as it ever was......

If we make drugs legal in the U.S., then prices will drop and quality will too. We all have an interest in maintaining the highest quality of pharmaceuticals.

Don't think the quality of booze went down once they ended prohibition. Free enterprise and a free market will probably make the quality even better.

The criminals (present dealers) could become police/tax collectors. Not much would change except for a better calibre of policing perhaps.

The war on drugs, like all wars designed to protect the 'American way of life',' is being fought on foreign soil so other countries suffer the collateral damage. This war has certainly done more damage to MΓ©xico than the drugs would have done. I say legalize; if the Americans want to continue the war let them do it at their own border.

Similar calls are made north of the US:

If you're worried about the quality dropping, have no fear, you can always get pot from B.C.
They grow way better pot than mexico and the u.s.

Lots of gang affiliates up here in Canada, the crypts and bloods kind of deal.

So sad up here in canada. Our government is ramming through a tough on crime bill.
I do agree with a lot of it. What I don't agree with is harsher penalties on possession of
any drugs and on pot growers.
This looks like the govt. is moving backwards on the drug issue!
