Sorry to all the Obama fans in Barra, but he really got his but kicked tonight. Biggest upset since the 40's

Obama wouldn't be running for another 2 years.

A little history lesson. Roosevelt lost 71 house seats at his midterms; Trueman lost 45 house seats at his midterm; Eisenhower lost 48 house seats; Johnson lost 47; Ford lost 48; Reagan lost 26; Clinton lost 52, ; and Bush the son lost 30.

Looks to me that the dems need to thank the Tea Party for screwing up the Repubs or they might have lost more. No big upset just midterm usual shifts. Know who didn't lose many seats? Carter and Bush the daddy. Guess how their re-election bids went.

A little more history, After Clinton lost 52 seats many were sure that he would just be a lame duck one term president. But what happened was that the repubs now in control of the house gridlocked it causing the American people to get very angry with them. At re-election time Clinton trounced Bob "where is my Viagra" Dole and at the end of his second term the polls showed that if they could American would have elected Clinton for a third term.

So now the repubs are promising to grid lock the government again. Problem with this is when you shut down the money you can't pick and choose. Everything gets shut down. The reality here is that this is the best thing that could have happened for Obama short of Sarah Palin winning the republican presidential nomination and Palin is poised to do that.

Now that it's over we can go back to regular programming and see those same three Canadian advertisements over and over again. I'm not sure which was more annoying.

Those DEmocrat senators up for reelection in 2 yrs have to be thing its time to listen to the people. And thats the way it should be. Damn shame they didnt pluck Reids feathers. At least that locita Pelosi has been silenced. That within itself is worth a cold beer!

Pelosi won with 80% of the vote in her district in California. Because the Rs took over the House, there will be a R Speaker. Pelosi was actually quite well-liked by both R and D colleagues.

As you may recall, when Obama was first elected, he met with the man (R) who is now set to become Speaker. That guy, who will now need to work with Obama to get anything done, said that Rs would not compromise on anything and would gridlock everything. That same guy cried last night, saying that the Rs would cut back spending (apparently by extending tax cuts for the wealthy at a cost of $4 billion dollars -- the ploy that was largely responsible for the mess the country is now in -- a ploy that did not work to stimulate the economy or jobs). The last time he cried was while he was urging Congress to pass Bush's TARP. So much for consistency and a lack of hypocritical behavior...

Ill drink one for you and Pelosi. At least things went in the right direction. Obama will be in close competition with Carter as the poorest president in history. And I hope he wins!

Gridlock is assured for two more years, Republicans and Democrats are more concerned about Party than what is best for the country. This is as impartial as I can be on the subject. Congress can do anything they want as long as it does not affect my Social Security check, raise taxes, and at the same time creates jobs and cuts spending. Yeah, right.

Latino Voters Save Senate for the Democrats

Smart move Sharon Angle, Carly Fiorina, (Sch)Meg Whitman, Tom Tancredo , Ken Buck and the state of Arizona. Way to alienate (pun intended) the little brown people. Guess what.... Their numbers are growing... FAST! Be afraid, be very very afraid.

The election was interesting for any number of reasons. Howard Dean, when chair of the DNC, had attempted to widen the appeal of Ds in traditionally R strongholds by getting very conservative Ds to run. In the main, these were the folks that lost. Ironically, while Dean's approach probably helped Obama get elected, it was what has undercut his policy reform.

It also seems that the Ds are incapable of explaining their considerable accomplishments -- and even more interesting that the Rs are able to in one breathe, push tax cuts for the wealthy (the ones that Rove touted as saving the US economy by stimulating business growth...duh...didn't work very well) and talk about reducing the deficit in the other.

The reason tax cuts for the wealthy don't work is that the wealthy don't spend the way the middle class and poor do. They hoard and grow their wealth, now to the tune of controlling over 70% in the hands of fewer than 20% of the population. This decimation of the US middle class is very, very scary -- and it had nothing to do with Obama or the last few years. This started with Reagan and if it is not addressed the results will be more Tea Party crazies who think government is the problem.

An interesting article in the August New Yorker Magazine gives substantial insight into how the wealthy, in this case and in particular, the Koch brothers, have spent hundreds of millions of dollars to build faux think tanks to undercut environmental laws and financial and insurance reforms.

None of this should be read as my believing the government does not need major reform. I do have a problem, though, with those that undercut respect for institutions primarily to push particular agendas, those that mislead the majority of voters into thinking that we can work our way out of the crisis without redistributing tax burdens so that the wealthy (many of whom use sophisticated strategies to avoid taxes altogether) pay their fair share, etc.

I could not agree more with Carol, her dog and Alan. The leaders of the right like to say that Obama and the left want the redistibution of wealth. While that may be true to a ceratin extent I think most would just like the distribution to be more better. Like it was fron 1950 - 1980...

I have nothing against people being very very rich but I don't think it is a good thing to have the lower 80% of the population to own only 15% of the wealth. It is just common sense that a healthy middle class is good for EVERYBODY including the very wealthy. I cannot understand why somebody with well over $1,000,000,000 and an income of well over $10,000,000 a year would think it is good to try to squeeze more out of the people who can barely squeak by. If that is the redistribution of wealth then I guess I am for it but do not think that redistribution of wealth means that everybody should have an equal piece of the pie. It just needs to be a healthier piece of the pie.

Both R's and D's are crap. C'mon folks, do y'all really buy into the BS that politicians create jobs in the private sector? Politicians repay favors to special interest groups. They ear mark funds for their friends, they give themselves raises, have premium health care, travel first class...and on, and on and on.

A record level of $$$ was reached this election cycle. Scary, because every dollar sent into a Politician's war chest is a favor that HAS to be re-paid to a special interest group.

Excellent. Just when the forum seemed to be running out of intelligent life. Can't remmember the wording but the legalization bill sounded like registration and taxation w/o a big benefit. Hard sell to nonconformists. The underground system is working too well maybe. This train stayed too long in the station.

This forum might attract more flies if renamed "mex american culture & politica" . Off-topic is off key. I haven't found another site where this mix of issues is discussed.
