Description
Catch and release is something we definitely promote, especially the case of any billfish. Our business is sportfishing, not commercial fishing and as such do not sell our catch, nor do we promote "meat fishing" or loading up multiple coolers of fish to bring home. Guests can certainly bring home reasonable amounts of Tuna, Dorado, Wahoo, Snapper etc. In the event of a record fish, or if billfish dies during the fight or cannot be successfully released, the meat from it will be donated to the senior citizens home or similar.
After a world record catch? We know all about that too. Jeff has 14 IGFA (International Game Fish Association) World Records, 12 of which were obtained in these same Mexican waters. Karen Morgan has 6 Women's IGFA World Records herself. As a result, the IGFA has designated us as a fully certified weigh station. As such, we are complete not only with record applications and certified digital scales, but also the experience to get you through the process, should you be so lucky to get the big one, or should we say ... the biggest one?

Although this area has typically been known as a Yellowfin Tuna area (we get some big ones), Dorado (Mahi, Dolphinfish), Wahoo and billfish species Pacific Sailfish, Striped Marlin, Blue Marlin, Black Marlin and even Spearfish are all found here.
The advantage of fishing in our area is that our water temperatures are consistently between 78 and 84 degrees, perfect conditions for these species. This is largely due to a warm water current, which comes across the South Pacific Ocean from Hawaii and hits land right about where we are. * This means that we have a lot more resident fish, as opposed to an area like Los Cabos where water temperatures have a 20 degree variance (65 to 85) over the course of a year, which results in more migratory fish and seasonal fishing. In other words, most of these species can be caught all year long here.
Inshore Fishing:
Because our water temperatures are consistently between 78 and 84 degrees we have a year round inshore sport fishery. Furthermore, species like Pargo (assorted large snapper species) and Cabrilla (assorted large grouper species) are not really sought after by commercial fishermen here, who primarily target 12 to 16 inch Huatchinango (red snapper) for sale to restaurants, who bake them whole. This means that there are still populations of the larger snappers, groupers

Surf Fishing:
There are plenty of opportunities here in Costalegre for the sportfisherman which don't involve a boat. All year long there are fish species here of one kind or another attainable from the shore. Such species include jacks, trevallies, pargo, sierra mackerel, snook, sharks, roosterfish and others. Most of these species can be caught with 15-20lb spinning gear, casting top water lures, spoons, and other assorted lures. There are also other smaller species of croakers, snappers, and the like available with cut bait for those who like to sit-put on the beach enjoying refreshments and the scenery. We also use larger dead or cut bait for sharks and large snapper.
Drop on by our tackle shop for a surf fishing rod rental, lures, leaders and bottom rigs or perhaps book one of our guided surf fishing trips and we'll show you how it's done.
We offer our guided surf fishing trips on their own, or as part of our fishing packages which include several days boat fishing, and accommodations. Please click on the packages link for an all-inclusive fishing vacation you'll never forget. We also rent surf fishing rods $20 per day or $85, and have a large selection of surf fishing lures and terminal tackle available for purchase. Drop by our tackle shop.
Surf Fishing Trips are offered all year long and include transportation from our tackle shop to the fishing area and back, all surf fishing equipment and drinks. We don't just dump you off on the beach with a rod either ... you will actually learn something about this type of fishing, how to cast effectively, reading water conditions, safety, lure and bait selection, fish species and how to fight and land them. $75 per person, minimum 2 people, maximum 4 people. Sorry, no room for tag-alongs.
Estaury Fishing:
The area is full of rivers, estuarys, mangroves and even an occasional freshwater lake. At times, some of these open up to the ocean, transferring baitfish, shrimp and other forms of life back and forth. Although we have not explored these avenues for sportfishing yet, rumors are that these brackish waters are filled with snook, assorted snapper, and other fish. We need a little more time to explore these possibilities but it is my guess that in the not too distant future, we will be offering some great opportunities for the light tackle enthusiast and fly fisherman.
