Akwasane reserve is notable as it covers land in both US and Canada and is the cigarette (and whatever) smuggling capital of Canada. A few years ago, Canada had to drop the cigarette tax considerably as the Crown was loosing too much revenue to the locals who were getting very rich running Canadian cigarettes back into Canada. Because those smokes were originally shipped to US, no Canadian taxes were paid on them. They would run them accross at night in faster boats than the poleece had and truck them to Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto for a few bucks cheaper to the cofumar. They also drove them accross the border on the reserve. The feds had to drop the tax for a while and installed area elecronic spy equipment butt, the mighty St. Lawrence River has been a smugglers paradise, especially in the nearby 1000 Islands region, since the first days of US prohibition and where there's a will, there's a way (especially if you enjoy island hopping). So, with a heritage of rum running and smuggling dating over 80 years, we have the modern day blockade busters of the St. Lawrence. They also get a kick out of running the tribal police cars off the roads with there big fancy trucks. I once went to a body shop there and there were autos from both sides of the cigarrette wars being repaired. Akwasnee has a casino and has been a high crime reserve for some time due to the lucrative important export business.
