Comment on Proposal to Restrict PMs

Tom,

You posted a message in the 'Announcements' section soliciting responses to your thoughts re. restricting Private Messages to only unmoderated users.

It is not possible to submit a reply in the 'Announcements' section.

You can comment here or email me. Here is the original announcement:

There have been a few complaints about PMs that have been
received on the tomzap forums. A PM is a personal message
that is sent from one forum user to another using the tomzap.com
forum system.

There is a software module available that could be used to
restrict the sending of PMs to only those members who are
approved to bypass the moderation system. To date, the
complaints we have received concerning unwanted PMs have
been from users who are not approved to bypass the moderation
system.

New users are by default not approved to bypass the moderation
system. We typically move users to the bypass moderation group
after they have posted several times and demonstrated that they
are not drawing complaints and are positive contributors to
the forum. We sometimes move new users to the bypass moderation
group on request. Users are moved out of the bypass moderation
group when there is a valid report of mis-use of the forum against
them.

So if we implement this PM messaging restriction, there will be
a large number of users that won't be able to use the PM system.
Most of them will be able to use it if they request to be added to
the bypass moderation group. On the positive side, it should eliminate
most unwanted PMs.

What do you think? Should we do this?

I go with sooner or later I will be guilty so the fewer laws there are the better off I am.

On a more serious note, I think that there are really no children on this board so why moderate anyone. If a poster is out of line just let the members sanction them and tell them what an idiot they are. It's beyond me why any moderator would want to be a hall monitor. Move irrelevant threads and lock down threads when they get to being crazy but otherwise let the members handle it. The board lets members "hide messages from this user" so if anyone is offended by another member just turn them off.

most if not all the cchildren, ages 10 and up have heard every word that could possible be used as a cuss word either at home or at school, so the idea it may offend some seems rather silly if you dont like what a poster says put HIM OR HER ON IGNORE, YOUR EYES WONT BE OFFENDED ANYMORE i believe if a poll were to be taken on tomzap, % wise they would not have moderated forum, but the few carry the big ax so just grin and bare it, adios bible thumpers, im sure you must know who you are
