Tomzap Content Decline

Sunset Magazine used to be a great place for advertisers sell their stuff...home, garden, etc..., but they had to insert actual 'public interest' stuff in order to keep the magazine fresh and delight full for their subscribers...

We actually had to see something that represented 'folk in real life'...and the results are nice, divine, and outright quirky upon reflection...and we subscribed for years...probably for the hope of the special or unusual...

At this moment on the Tomzap 'Sanitized' Visitors forum, we have lost most of the quirkiness that has made this space a great place to visit...

We now have the 'news'...how to take the bus/plane/burro to wherever; how to get your FM3 stuff done; which restaurant has some kind of noise;...etc...

but, I think we have lost the salsa...the local 'talk' ...the stuff among the full timers down here that make the forum real...

Somewhere in the middle of trying to keep the whole thing comfy for the masses...and continue being a really great forum for the discussion of life in the tropics for all consumers, there has been a loss.

I'm hoping that the moderator might return to the former unmoderated event...there were no deaths...there were no murders...suicides...and, there were lots of feathers ruffled...

Perhaps a 'scared chicken' approach might be allowed?...and,maybe those chickens who might brave to come here have a very good place to squawk ...and be squawked against...

I for one think that you have the wrong idea , this forum lets people who have never been in Barra or Melaque to read the forum and find out as much as they can about the area. I have told some of my friends about the forum and how to get to read it , they in turn have made the trip and really enjoy the area and the people. I read it every day until I arrive for my holiday, then when I get home start reading it again , as the winter month draw near you can see all the posts of previous visitors to the area and all the interest they have . keep up the good work posters and also ask your questions as the answers help others as well. I agree Jim. The element that has been blurred from the board for a long time is in it's title.

Although "how to take the bus/plane/burro to wherever" may seem trivial to some, a bus question was the first I ever asked and have responded to many times since.....as recent as a PM just last week.

"Visitors' Comments" and Tom's boards in general have helped me a great deal up and down the coast. A friend recently returned from Huatulco and area and thanked me very much for the link.

Today, stanburn's reply to a query about futball reminded me to check his webpage and from there I linked to a 3rd division schedule. Looks like I will be able to take in a game when I visit next.

Not sure what is going on. I am not moderated (so far) so my posts appear immediately I hit the "post button".
Same is probably true for most people (Sorry BW). Did not realize that DH might also be so restricted.



I know this might cause me some heartburn, but I will tell you I got up before dawn today, and took my camera outside.
The shot is at the entrance to Cedarbrook Lodge (Seattle in case you are interested) and the dull spot on the water is ice!!!!! If you don't love being in Mexico, then go somewhere else. But I think you should also have your brain examined.

I'm on double secret probation (reference Animal House, one of the greatest movies of all time, along with Pulp Fiction). Personally, I agree with Dry House. The board WAS informative AND entertaining. Now it's "muy aburido".

like i said...how many times would one check in and read a bus schedule?...

and yup,...those who don't live her are hearing some of us trying to create something more than a menu...

for those of you who are not just visitors...you want to discover the rest of the experience?

I am enjoying the new format and a level of moderation from Tom & Ms. It's interesting to see comments about where we will go to eat, entertain, and be entertained in both Melaque and Bara, the travel opportunities while there.

What I don't miss is having to put up with 3 or 4 cantankerous mean & nasties trying to dampen each others cornflakes on the forum! Do that on e mail direct and leave the forum for civilized posts. Thanks Tom

I think the new forum is fine......How soon we forget the ROOSTER bash and banter....this is supposed to be an informational forum that encourages interaction with users new and old . People who wish to come to the area, and visitors who return, and established ex-pats that love to assist. Just look at the stats when someone now asks a legitimate ,honest question....the views are 20 fold.... Let's not go backwards.....we know where that was. Let's look forward to more great bird pics, fish pics, restaurant reports (good and bad) from everyone.... Notices of changes in prices, bus schedules,new tours, new bungalows and houses for rent, festivals and events, new stores and cars for rent. Save the bad banter for the BLOGS and TWITTER and FACEBOOK ..This whole forum is like a never ending plane flight to and from Melaque/Barra....and some folks never get off...while some do and return, while still others want to get on, but are maybe afraid of the sometimes unruly passengers. But we all have questions that yearn to be answered,and most are. I think it's the food for thought that we all need when we can't be there....I am driving down from Tucson on Jan.15th if someone wants to go..send me a personal email...........Felix Ano Nuevo....Armando

Yup.
Question remains who wants to be on a plane all the time.

I would have thought that there is enough commercialism available without just about restricting this forum to advertising related stuff.

I for one do not like the personal attacks so I usually just stay out of those postings. If a little moderation is needed, so be it. Afterall, this site belongs to Tom and it is his call. JMHO

I've been here for four years, never posted, but read often. I used to LOL. Not any more! Freedom to express your self is a founding freedom in most first wold countries. As well as freedom NOT TO READ! If you censor types don't like something DON'T READ IT! CONTROL YOUR SELF, DON'T TRY TO CONTROL SOMEONE ELSE'S FREEDOM! I need to LOL again!

Count me as another vote for freedom of expression, and the ability to not read threads you don't appreciate. Communities are not built solely on tourist info......and the old format had plenty of both, and the discerning reader was able to find that which suited their taste. I want to laugh, be moved, offended, inspired and puzzled by Tomzap again!

There is no guarantee of "freedom of speech" on commercial sites, as this one is. Freedom of speech, as guaranteed by the US constitution (not the Mexican one, as far as I know) applies to GOVERNMENT censorship. This is Tom's site, he can do as he please, and my opinion, this board needed some moderation and is better for it.

the censorshipmakes me dizzy and why bother with it. then it takes a long time to catch up but now with less there is less to catch up on. a lose /win.

the toner of the puerto forum is way off putting. when mr. bananas disappeared i made some unflattering comments when i really wanted to discuss the bootleg video market in mexico in general.


sorry if you can't understand my posts and i guess they are lost in the ethernet or in san juan del pacific of the mind. so wwhy bother. just to tell people to walk to the bus station outside the airport, anywhere.

I will save the reality, everyone who lives here knows whats going on and who is doing it. Few people know what bad things happen weekly that never ever hit the news... what does hit the papers does not hold a candle to what is stopped by Oaxaca government.

Censorship also however keeps people nieve to the extreme dangers that are passing you in the street everyday and who not to associate with. Also censorship or blacklisting people known to cause harm to others on the streets or thru the use of Tomzap's social connections is a positive thing. Were not talking about name calling either. These people would never be allowed in the streets of the U.S. or Canada and thats why they are here in Mexico.
People trying to demerit honest people or promote criminals leave the outsider with an undecipherable view that can lead them into dangerous choices or investments in the area that have cost them millions of dollars...not pesos in the VERY recent past.

Lots of bad things happening to good people because thats who these people pray on.
Word to the wise, a puerto attorney will never get you out of trouble, just let you think you have. In the meanwhile they will show you everyone who is corrupt.

i still i cant quite figure out why the involvement of a moderator, if you have read something you think it to nasty for you, put the poster on ignore and you never have to be offended again and i would bet anyone that everyone on this board has heard the word f___k before or saw a pair of tits, i will proably get censored for that comment, anyway there isa sayings "sticks and stones may break you bones,,but words never will"

That does not apply in the Wild West. Locals will almost cry if you just caught them in your house and then call them a thief. They will try to get you for defamation. Or if one slams into your car and you call them a drunk.

Its like dropping down a wave and a local starts screaming..."you ALMOST hit me" little babies should cry when they do get hit and not before. Thats the mentality, third grade at best.
