About: Highway Song

This song was written around 1982 by Tom Penick. It is a rock and roll trucking song. The mention of the 55mph speed limit is in reference to the 1974 Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act that set the maximum national speed limit to 55 mph. This was a fuel-saving measure in response to gasoline shortages during the 1973 oil crisis. The act was repealed in 1995 and the states were once again in charge of setting their speed limits. So it no longer applies, but we are not changing the song.
