Description
The name "Bacaanda" come from the local Zapotec Indian word for "dream". The Bacaanda Foundation's goal is to turn dreams for a better future into realities. Our volunteers come from many countries and all walks of life.
In our first year of operation we've focused on the town of San Felipe Lachillo, a mountain village in the mountains 3 hours north of Huatulco. Among other projects, we've fully funded over 250 dental visits to the Red Cross dentist in Huatulco, equipped and supported boys and girls soccer teams, helped create a banana plantation and gotten a solid start on a project to train the people of SFL in arts and crafts which we will then help them to sell. One of our goals in the new year is to expand our programs to other villages.
The foundation is organized as an American 501c(3) public charity and is also registered in Mexico as "El Sueno Zapoteco, AC". We have no paid staff. At this point we're funding the foundation through personal funds and any proceeds from the rental of our house, Casa Bacaanda, in Huatulco, although we are starting to fundraise among our friends and family.
