January 2018: For many years--perhaps as many as 20 years--folks gather at the same spot on Playa Zicatela to watch the final sunset of the year. A violinist plays, people light sparklers, many toast the view with beverages of all sort. Sky divers float to the sand farther down the beach and the two planes that drop them fly low over the group, their annual New Year's greeting. Hugs abound. When the sun disappears over the horizon, everyone shouts, "¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Happy New Year!" The group changes from year to year, though there's a core of old timers.
Afterwards, those gathered head off to different restaurants or to their homes. It's a lovely tradition.
