Manzamigos A.C. is a non-profit organization, formed in the year 2000 by the then mayor of Manzanillo, Rogelio Rueda, Guillermo Gomez of Nissan elected as President and the late William Ziener. At that time all of the heads of the various departments in Manzanillo that would or could affect the tourists and foreign community in Manzanillo were included on the board. Manzamigos in its designation became committed to assisting both Foreign and National communities, where possible, as well as creating situations for people new to the area to meet others who have made the big decision to live in Manzanillo.
In 2003, Thirsty Thursday was started as a weekly general meeting place and from the original half dozen or so people who met at the Sunset Lounge has developed into a huge success with, on one occasion, as many as 175 people attending during the winter season. Thirsty Thursday has become a social institution in Manzanillo and a place where newcomers to the area can reap all kinds of information as well as make friends.
We are currently planning a Christmas Party in December, for underprivileged Children, an Improv Theatre evening at the Manzanillo Country Club in January and in February we will join in the Carnival Parade on Shrove Tuesday where we distribute, as usual, more than 60 kilos of candies to the young people of the City. These events are where we can continue to show our appreciation for the friendship shown us by the citizens of Manzanillo.
For over seven years now, we have produced a book of translations to assist non-Spanish speaking people in shopping " "Shopping in Mexico" and a second book "Dining Out in Manzanillo" (now out of print) was also produced for a few years as a guide to local restaurants. The latest edition of the translation book also contains important phone numbers of businesses and professional people in Manzanillo.
Our web page is up and running beautifully, advising everyone of what's happening, what's available, and what to take precautions against and the monthly newsletter is a voice to which many people contribute articles and information. The newsletter is so active that during the winter season a mini messenger is sent out to members weekly.
As in all associations, membership is the life blood and we are most grateful to those 275 people (from an initial 5) who have helped us by both becoming members and participating in our ventures. Membership is only 250 pesos per family.
Following seven years of stewardship, Nigel Rumford handed the baton of President over to Gerry Szakacs who was elected President in 2008 and who is continuing to build the Association into a well known and respected friendly society.
