Salt drying beds of Cuyutlan   more detail
The town of Cuyutlán lies 22 miles east of Manzanillo and 33 miles south of Colima near a large salt water lagoon of the same name. It belongs to the Armería municipality. Aerial Photos of the area are available. The town has been a popular beach resort for decades and shows its age in places. Numerous palapa restaurants line the beach of somewhat coarse grey sand. Cuyutlán is known for 3 things, the Green Wave and the Museo de la Sal or salt museum, and the Miguel Álvarez del Toro Productive, Recreation, and Ecological Center.

The Green Wave is a period of high waves, dark green in color, 2 meters or more in height, produced by strong currents during the Spring at sunset. The waves are quite striking backlite by the setting sun.

The Museo de la Sal tells the story of the history of the production of sea salt dating to pre-Hispanic times. The salt is still produced and may be found for sale in the town. The salt is a very coarse grain.

The Miguel Álvarez Center is involved in the study and protection of sea turtles which come to local beaches to lay their eggs. The turtles come to lay their eggs from June to December and the Center collects and hatches the eggs followed by release of the turtles into the ocean.
