What is the purpose of the Visitors' Comments?

The Visitors' Comments is for the exchange of information regarding the coastal and near-coastal regions of the Mexican states of Oaxaca, Jalisco, and Colima among visitors, potential visitors, local residents, armchair travelers, etc.
The name "Visitors' Comments" was given to the forum at a time when the only internet access within Mexico was at Mexican universities. So virtually all of the comments were from people outside of Mexico, who were interested in visiting Mexico. Now internet access is readily available to the public in Mexico and we have a lot of residents of Mexico posting to the Visitors' Comments.

Do I have to Log In to use the Visitors' Comments?

If you don't log in your will be able to read some of the comments but the more popular forums (Barra de Navidad/Melaque, Jalisco; Huatulco, Oaxaca; and Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca) will be hidden. If you log in you will be able to read all of the comments and you will be able to post a comment. You must be a registered user in order to log in. In addition to the ability to post, registration enables the following:
- It allows you to go back later and edit your own posts.
- It allows you to choose a user name that no one else is allowed to use, so no one else can pretend to be you.
- You can select a different language for the menus. The default language is English but you can set it to Spanish or even "Spanglish" which is both English and Spanish separated by a "•". (Contact me if your language is not available--I can probably fix that.)
- You can create a signature that will appear automatically at the bottom of your posts.
- You can selectively hide the posts of individual users.
- You can send private messages to other registered users.
- You can upload images and .pdf files.
- You can report inappropriate posts to the moderators.

What is the problem with Hotmail Accounts?

Hotmail sometimes refuses to accept email from the tomzap.com domain. This is happening at the time of this writing. So right now I cannot send email to anyone with a hotmail address. Furthermore, you cannot create a Visitors' Comments user account because you won't receive the confirmation email that is part of the registration process. If you are already registered to use the forum and you used a hotmail address then you cannot receive a new password or a notification for a thread you are following or a notification that you have received a message from a forum user. If you are having problems with your account, send me email from a non-hotmail account. tom@tomzap.com.

Are the Visitors' Comments moderated?

Some forums are moderated and some users are moderated. Moderators may adjust the scope of moderation as required. The posts of new users are moderated by default. Registered users may participate by clicking on "Report" to alert the moderators to a post that is off-topic, contains person-to-person name-calling, contains objectionable images, or is otherwise inappropriate.

To what degree are the Visitors' Comments censored?

Posts may be removed if they do not pertain to or contribute to the discussion or if they appear to be designed to agitate or contain person to person name-calling. Posts that contain images that either the moderators or other users deem objectionable are subject to removal. Topics posted in the Mexico forums that are not about Mexico will be moved to the Off-Topic Forum. Certain bad words, such as the f-word, will be excluded automatically by software. The moderators do not read all posts so readers should use the Report button to alert moderators of objectionable content. Posts are removed at the moderators' discretion.

How to I create a signature to appear at the bottom of my posts?

Navigate to one of the Visitors' Comments Forums. In the menu bar at the top of the list, click on "Control Center". In the next window, click on Edit Signature. If you want to add an image to your signature, do the following: Upload your image to tomzap.com by clicking on Edit My Files. Click on Browse and locate the image on your computer. After the image has been uploaded, it will appear in a list. Click on the image so that it is displayed. Copy the URL from the top of your browser; it will look something like "http://www.tomzap.com/ph5/file.php/xx/xx/myimage.gif". Use the back button to get back to Control Center and click on Edit Signature. Paste the URL into the signature window. Type the image tags [IMG][/IMG] around the URL like this: "[IMG]http://www.tomzap.com/ph5/file.php/xx/xx/myimage.gif[/IMG]", without the quotes. When you've added the text and images to your signature, click Submit.

When I post a message, why does it say I'm an Anonymous User?

When tomzap.com moved to a new server in November 2009, some of the database fields were lost with the result that the username is not displayed properly. I have repaired many of these but since there are more than 4000 registered users, it is unlike that I will fix them all. You can correct the problem by clicking on Control Center, then Edit my Profile. In the Real Name box, enter your username (not your real name) and click Submit. This will result in your username being listed correctly in any new posts but in existing posts you will remain Anonymous User.

What can I do about a post that I don't approve of?

There are two things you can do. 1) You can click on Report in the lower right-hand corner of the post. That will alert the moderators. 2) If you don't want to see the posts from that author you can click on Hide Messages from this User at the top of the post. This will eliminate the text from this user's posts. You can easily restore the text by clicking Show msgs from this User at the top of the post.

Can I change the language used for the menus?

Yes, there are several languages available and I may be able to add more on request. tom@tomzap.com Click on Control Center, then Forum Settings. In the drop-down list box for Language, select the language you prefer and click Submit. One of the languages is called Spanglish which will display the menus in both English and Spanish together. That may be useful if you are trying to learn one language or the other.

How do I display an image in my post?

You can attach an image to your message by clicking Attach a file and it will be available for others to view or download but is not displayed within the post. That is the easy way.
To display an image within your post, you must first upload the image to your own publicly-viewable web space somewhere. Then you place the URL to your image within your message enclosed in [IMG] tags like this: [img]http://mywebspace.com/myimage.jpg[/img]
You do have your own web space available on tomzap.com when you are logged in to the Visitors' Comments. To access it, click on Control Center then on Edit My Files. Click on Browse to locate a file on your computer to upload to your tomzap web space. Once that file appears in your list of files, right click on the file name and select Copy Link Location.
Now go to the window where you are creating or editing a message for the Visitors' Comments. Click to put the cursor in the message window and hit Ctrl + V or right-click and select Paste. That will put the image location in the message window like this: http://69.73.170.179/ph5/file.php/0/42/bird_1.gif Now you just have to add the [IMG] [/IMG] like this:

When you post your message, the above text will disappear and the image will be displayed in its place. There is a resolution limitation of about 800 pixels in width to images displayed in tomzap posts.

Can I use the PM System (Personal Messaging)?

New users do not have access to the PM (Personal Messaging) system. In order to use the PM system a user must be registered for a certain number of days, must have successfully posted a certain number of times, and must be unmoderated. New users are moderated by default but the moderator may elect to change that after a number of acceptable posts have been seen or upon request from the user. The reason for the PM restrictions is to prevent unwanted threatening or bullying personal messages from a few of the users who like to do that.

I wouldn't worry about one or two bad comments. Even the best places will occasionally have a dissatisfied customer and such a customer is more likely to comment than someone who thought the hotel was okay. However, if the majority of the posts reflect bad experiences then I would definitely consider alternatives.

Yes, provided your announcement is informative and relevant to a particular area that is covered in the Visitors' Comments. Please do not broadcast your announcement in multiple forums. Some of the readers may take offense at the practice of advertising in the Visitors' Comments; it will be helpful if you also participate in the forums to provide other useful information to readers.

Click on Hide Msgs from this User at the top of the post next to the username. This will remove the bodies of all of this user's posts from your view. In the event that the user does post something of interest to you, just click "User Ignored - Click to show/hide this message" and the one message body will appear. If you feel that a user is abusing his or her privilege to advertise, click on Report to alert the moderators.

Ahora el acceso a internet está disponible para el toda la poblacion y tenemos una gran cantidad de residentes de México que publica en los Comentarios de los Visitantes.

¿Me tengo que conectar a usar los Comentarios de los Visitantes?

Si no se registra, podrá leer algunos de los comentarios, pero los foros más populares (Barra de Navidad/Melaque, Jalisco, Huatulco, Oaxaca y Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca) quedar&aac7te;n ocultos. Si usted se registra usted será capaz de leer todos los comentarios y usted será capaz de publicar un comentario. Además de la posibilidad de publicar los comentarios, el registro habilita a lo siguiente:
- Le permite entrar despues y editar sus propios comentarios.
- Le permite seleccionar un nombre del usuario que nadie mas puede usar, para que nadie que no sea usted publique con su nombre.
- Puedes seleccionar un idioma diferente para los menús. El idioma por defecto es Inglés pero puedes selecionar Español o "Spanglish" qué es ambos Inglés y Español separó por un "•". (Me avisa si su idioma no está disponible--nosotros probablemente lo podamos arreglar.)
- Puedes crear una firma que aparecerá automáticamente al fondo de sus mensajes.
- Puedes esconder los postes de usuarios individuales selectivamente.
- Puedes enviar los mensajes privados a otros usuarios registrados.
- Puedes subir imágenes y archivos de tipo .pdf.
- Puedes informar los comentarios impropios a los moderadores.

¿Cuál es el problema con las cuentas de Hotmail?

Hotmail a veces se niega a aceptar correo electrónico del tomzap.com. Esto está sucediendo en el momento de escribir este artículo. Así que ahora mismo no puedo enviar correo electrónico a nadie con una dirección hotmail. Además, no puede crear una cuenta de usuario de comentarios de visitantes porque no recibirá el correo electrónico de confirmación que forma parte del proceso de registro. Si ya está registrado para utilizar el foro y utilizó una dirección hotmail, no podrá recibir una nueva contraseña o una notificación para un subproceso que esté siguiendo o una notificación de que ha recibido un mensaje de un usuario del foro. Si tienes problemas con tu cuenta, envíame un correo electrónico de una cuenta que no sea de Hotmail. tom@tomzap.com.

Algunos foros se moderan y algunos usuarios se moderan. Los Moderadores pueden ajustar el uso moderación como requerida. Se moderan los postes de nuevos usuarios por defecto. Los usuarios registrado pueden participar pulsando el botón en "Informe" para alertar a los moderadores de un comentario que esta fuera de-contexto , o una persona llamando a otra con sobrenombres, imagenes de contenido cuestionable o de algun modo impropio.

¿A qué grado se censuran los Comentarios de los Visitantes?

Podemos quitar los mensajes si no pertenecen a o contribuyen a la discusión o si ellos aparecen ser dirigidos a molestar o contienen sobrenombres de alguien en especifico. Mensajes que contienen imágenes que los moderadores u otros usuarios juzgan inaceptable están sujetos a ser removidos. Se moverán temas anunciados en los foros de México que no son sobre México al foro off topic. Ciertas palabras malas serán excluidas automáticamente por el software. Los moderadores no leen todos los mensajes para que los lectores deben utilizar el botón Informe para alertar a los moderadores de contenido objetable. Mensajes son eliminados a discreción de los moderadores.

Yo he reparado muchos de éstos pero hay subsecuentemente más de 4000 usuarios registrados, es dificil que yo pueda corregir todos. Usted puede arreglar el problema pulsando el botón en el Centro de Control, entonces de click en Editar mi Perfil. En el cuadro del Nombre Real, ponga su nombre de usario (no su nombre real) y pulse el botón Enviar. Esto producirá su username a listándose correctamente en cualquier nuevo mensajes pero en los mensajes existentes seguirá siendo el Usuario Anónimo.

Esto eliminará el texto de los mensajes de este usuario. Usted puede restaurar el texto fácilmente pulsando el botón Show Msgs from this user en la parte de arriba del mensaje.

Puede subir una imagen con su mensaje y estará disponible para que otros la puedan mirar o descargar pero no desplegará dentro el mensaje. Desplegar una imagen dentro su mensaje, usted debe primero sube la imagen a su propio espacio web . Usted tiene su propio espacio web en tomzap.com cuando esta registrado en Los Comentarios de Visitantes. Para accesar, haga clic en Centro de Control, entonces en Editar mis Archivos. Haga clic Browse para encontrar un archivo en su computadora y subir su espacio web en tomzap.com. Cuando ese archivo aparece en su lista de archivos, haga clic derecho y seleciona Examinar copia locación de link.

¿Puedo usar el Systema de Mensaje Privado?

Los nuevos usuarios no tienen acceso al Sistema Mensaje Privado. Para utilizar el sistema MP, un usuario debe estar registrado durante un cierto número de días, debe haber publicado con éxito un cierto número de veces y debe estar de grupo sin modificaciones. Los nuevos usuarios son moderados por defecto, pero el moderador puede optar por cambiarlo después de haber visto un número de publicaciones aceptables o petición del usuario. La razón de las restricciones de MP es prevenir mensajes privados amenazantes o intimidantes no deseados de algunos de los usuarios que les gusta hacer eso.

Incluso los mejores lugares pueden cliente insatisfecho de vez en cuando y este cliente más probablemente es comentar que alguien que pensó el hotel era bueno. Sin embargo, si la mayoría de los mensajes tiene malos comentarios entonces yo consideraría definitivamente otras opciones.
